Archie was born and educated in Dumfries. His career in ceramics began in 1970 with a three-year apprenticeship to the potter John Davey in Kirkcudbrightshire.
From 1978 he pursued his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Edinburgh College of Art before joining the staff of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. In 1986 he was appointed Lecturer in Glasgow School of Art where he worked for twentyfive years as Head of Ceramics and latterly as Programme Leader for the undergraduate programmes in the School of Design.
Since his retirement from GSA in 2011 he has returned to making in his home studio at Kindar Mill, New Abbey, near Dumfries. Archie has lectured, delivered workshops and exhibited extensively throughout the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Russia, the Czech Republic, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland and Hungary. Archie’s work is represented in numerous public and private collections in the UK and abroad.
He is particularly interested in ensuring that the interests of Upland members are represented at a national and international level.
