Modern Makers is a project run by Upland that enables young people (under 30 years) to work intensively over 30 days with a professional maker (or makers) to learn craft skills.
Developed from Modern Heritage Craft which began in 2013, the programme has seen young people learn skills in shoe making, furniture building, glass and jewellery. In 2016 Modern Makers enabled six young people to work collaboratively with Sam Booth (Echo Living) to design and build a bespoke bird hide for an RSPB reserve near Wigtown. In 2017 four young people worked with internationally renowned slipware potters Fitch & McAndrew and in 2018 another group of four worked with Alex Rigg creating and designing costumes for a new performance by his company, Oceanallover.
This year’s programme has focused on the craft of printmaking and its application through exploring a range of printmaking processes. The six participants have worked closely with three established printmakers based in Dumfries & Galloway: Colin Blanchard, Pamela Grace and Hugh Bryden. The group have worked at Colin Blanchard’s studio near Waterbeck and at the Gracefield Arts Centre Print Studio experimenting with lithography, screen printing, lino cut, collagraph and etching. During the programme this year’s Modern Makers have also visited other print makers in the region including Lisa Hooper, Sarah Stewart and Claire Melinsky, gaining further insight into how different print makers create their work and how an artist / maker functions in today’s social and economic environment.
We are delighted to work with the Ottersburn Gallery to celebrate the achievements of this year’s Modern Makers and showcase a selection of prints they have created during the programme.
The 2019 Modern Makers are: Ione McCall, Jamie Stryker, Erin Retson, Katy Billington, Blossom McCuaig and Emily Tough.
