Emerge is a 9 month programme of mentoring, networking and training for emerging artists who have a connection to Dumfries and Galloway.

We are delighted to announce that we have awarded two Emerge Young Artist Bursaries for 2018. This year's recipients are David Rae and Kyna Hodges.

David graduated from Grays School of Art in 2017 with a first class honours in painting. He creates paintings based on locations that featured in his childhood, places he has visited or imagined. Within his paintings David likes to include subtle narratives creating an element of curiosity with the title and compositional elements within the paintings offering clues for the viewer regarding each paintings subject.

Kyna graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2017 where she studied Communication Design, specialising in photography. Kyna's practice includes installation, photography, mixed media and sculpture. Fascinated by the complexities of the psyche and the ethical and ideological issues that arise from just being, Kyna aims to forge a new narrative of understanding through her work. She has explored a mixed media and varied approach to making, but found that wet plate collodion photography played an essential role in translating the ideas which she developed for her degree show.

Over the next nine months David and Kyna will be mentored by experienced Upland Member artists. David will be mentored by Bea Last and Kyna will be mentored by Denise Zygadlo and Morag Paterson.

Both David and Kyna will be taking part in Spring Fling Open Studios 2018 and we look forward to seeing how they progress!

Emerge 2018 is funded by the Holywood Trust and the Archie Sutter Watt Trust.
