An introduction from Hope London to basic legal concepts that every artist should understand: Contracts and Copyrights (Intellectual Property).

Once you decide to make a living through your work, you’ll find yourself entering into agreements -  whether for sales of work, licensing, reproduction, residencies, workshops, commissions of any kind or just about anything else an artist might do.  You need to be familiar with these legal concepts in order to protect yourself and respect the rights of others and complete projects successfully.  Though there are complex issues beyond the scope of this short presentation, the aim is that you’ll begin to understand the ‘red flags’ to look out for in any project, stand up for yourself, ask questions and know when to seek specialist advice.

Hope London is a visual artist, writer, musician, performer and co-creator of award winning arts-based education programs who believes in the transformative power of the arts and loves working with people to unleash creative potential. Back in the 70s, shortly after helping set up the first cooperative gallery in Queens, New York, Hope trained as a lawyer, to best understand the mysterious world of contracts, copyrights, trademarks, and all the other business issues that affect artists' professional practice. Hope graduated with a Juris Doctor, a Fellowship in Copyright Law and a writing award from ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers), and became a member of the State Bar Association of California, going on to work as a lawyer representing artists, writers, graphic novelists, video makers and musicians.
