Emerge Exhibition at The Catstrand
10 December 2020 to 31 March 2021
Exhibition now on at the CatStrand
Our three 2020 Emerge recipients: Izzy Leach, Sophie Jarzyna and Blossom McCuaig are currently exhibiting work at the CatStrand in New Galloway, which is now available to view online.
Emerge is a programme of mentoring and a bursary of £1,000 for emerging artists or makers who have a connection to Dumfries & Galloway run by Upland CIC.
In 2020, Upland awarded three Emerge Bursaries, two for young artists and makers under 30 years supported by the Holywood Trust and one without an age limit supported by Creative Scotland. The emerging artists are matched with an established practitioner in a related discipline, given £1000 to fund the creation of new work and gain funded and automatic entry into Spring Fling Open Studios. The programme is aimed at emerging artists who intend to pursue a career as a professional artist / maker, providing support which will enable the participants to develop both creatively and professionally providing a stepping stone between education and a career in the arts.
This year's recipients were Blossom McCuaig, Sophie Jarzyna and Izzy Leach.
Blossom graduated from Lancaster University with a BA English Literature & Philosophy. She is based in Dumfries, doing illustration, installation, painting, drawing, printmaking, murals and street art. She is being mentored by Emma Varley, Lucy MacLeod and Mark Zygadlo.
Sophie is a self-taught potter from Langholm (currently based here and with a studio in neighbouring Claygate). She completed an Art & Design Foundation Diploma at Cumbria Institute of the Arts and is being mentored by Chris Taylor and Clare Dawdry.
