Making Connections // Schools Project Exhibition
16 November 2020 to 29 November 2020
An exhibition by pupils from Langholm Academy and Primary School exploring the local textile heritage with textile artist Morag Macpherson.
16th - 29th November 2020
A non- contact window exhibition of work by Langholm Academy and Primary School pupils
42-44 Langholm High Street.
Making Connections is a new project being run by Upland CIC which aims to enable artists and/or makers to explore and highlight Langholm’s rich history and heritage in textile manufacture. With input and support from local organisations, Outpost Arts and the Langholm Initiative, we have developed a project which consists of an artist residency, a creative commission and a schools project.
We are pleased to deliver this new exhibition which is a culmination of the schools project, which has been led by Kirkcudbright-based textile artist Morag Macpherson. Morag has worked with pupils from Langholm Academy and Langholm Primary school between January and March 2020 enabling the pupils to create their own work in response to the project themes.
Morag’s approach to textiles through surface pattern design and digital printing was embodied by the students in the creation of their own pattern designs. Using school software and tablets, they coloured, repeated and played with original motifs, created from their own photography, taken during research visits to local textile manufacturer’s, Elliot’s Shed and Drove Weaving. Judith Johnson from the Langholm Initiative provided historical and local knowledge which added to the authenticity of the project.
Finally designs were digitally printed onto linen and patch worked with locally manufactured tweed, into reversible workwear aprons. Just like the factory workers might have worn, working in the mills during the last century.
The project was due to finish during the spring but had to be postponed due to Covid-19. We are very pleased and thankful to all involved for finding creative ways to complete the work and share the results with the local community!
The pupils work will be on display in the windows of 42-44 Langholm High Street (formally the Look Out) from 16th - 29th Nov - we hope you can go for a look!
A massive thank you and well done to all of the pupils involved for creating the fantastic work on display!
We would also like to thank Langholm Academy and Primary School, Judith Johnson (the Langholm Initiative), Lucy Macleod (Outpost Arts), Nicol Nicolson (the Langholm Alliance), Jamie Stryker, Helen Storey and The Stevenson Trust for use of the window space.
The Making Connections Project is supported by Creative Scotland, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Archie Sutter Watt Trust.
