Jay Rubinstein
I make wooden mobiles, based in Dumfries and Galloway. Often my pieces are in response to poems or stories. The intention is to make objects that are beautiful but also carry meaning.
I look for ways in which mobiles enable a single shape to represent different things depending on viewpoint or distance. Sometimes, images appear and disappear as the air takes the piece, or the onlooker changes perspective.
Every stage of making the mobile involves exploration, decisions and revisions. The colours produced by various timbers, the shapes it is possible to make and the shapes they suggest in turn, the stringing of the pieces and the movement in the final piece all require deliberation and experiment.
It’s hard to get a proper idea of the mobiles from still images. Videos of some of them can be found on my website k or on my YouTube channel
