Catherine Coulson

My work explores environmental and ecological aesthetics of biodiverse habitats and how we interpret and respond emotionally to these environments. I try to describe what it feels like to be in nature, surrounded by the elements which make it unique.

My paintings attempt to capture the contrast between the richness and complexity of natural habitats and how we experience them as calm, reflective spaces. They convey transience and shifting atmosphere, depth and mystery, imperfection and patina from weather, decay and growth. They leave space for interpretation; looking beyond visual representation to describe a tangible experience and narrative of place.

I spend time pondering and slowly observing these environments, writing, researching, and photographing.
