We are delighted to announce that the recipients of the Emerge mentoring award for 2022 are Joshua Williams and Savannah Crosby.

Joshua is a potter with a studio in Newton Stewart and Savannah is a photographer based in Stranraer.

Emerge is a programme which supports early career artists and makers from Dumfries & Galloway. Recipients receive mentorship from experienced artists / makers along with a bursary of £1000 to create and present new work.

We’ll be releasing further details as the programme gets started in the New Year but in the meantime here’s some information on the artists taking part:

Joshua Williams

Josh makes functional ware, which is currently made using earthenware clay. He is currently experimenting with local clays and materials in order to further develop his own unique style.

Following a two year apprenticeship at a production Pottery in Oxfordshire, Josh returned to the region and set up his ceramic studio in 2020. Josh is looking to progress to the next step of his creative practise during the Emerge programme and aims to test using more local materials in order to better understand how they work, and which he can use in his work to produce the pots he wants to make.

Savannah Crosby

Savannah recently graduated from the University of the West of Scotland with a MA in Creative Media Practice, having previously completed the BA (Hons) Photography course at the University of Cumbria.

Savannah’s work focuses on landscape/nature photography, exploring mental health and how being around nature helps improve mental health and wellbeing.

Walking and being surrounded by nature is key to Savannah’s work, as she explains:  “My work represents finding a sense of belonging and escaping while hopelessly wandering. Dumfries and Galloway is an important part of my work, the region is what inspires me. It is important to me that my work continues to showcase this incredible area.”

Emerge 2022 is funded by the Holywood Trust and Creative Scotland
