CALL OUT // Upland Peer Mentors
Peer mentors wanted – Expressions of interest
This opportunity is for Upland professional members only.
As part of our professional development programme we are piloting remote peer support sessions.
These will be 1:1 sessions for Upland Members, allowing artists and makers to gain peer support through a focused session with a fellow artist who has suitable experience, both as a creative practitioner and in teaching and/or mentoring.
These sessions are aimed at members working in any discipline and may be at any stage in their career, from emerging to established. We feel that mentoring and critiques can be helpful at any stage in an artist or makers career and sometimes just having someone objective to discuss what you are working on can be advantageous in moving forward.
Before we can offer these sessions, we are looking to recruit 2-3 professional artists or makers from the Upland membership who have a wealth of experience including mentoring and/or teaching in a higher education setting. We are looking for both visual art and craft expertise.
Due to current restrictions these sessions will take place remotely, using Zoom or Skype.
We envisage sessions to run for an hour maximum and act as a kind of remote studio visit/ tutorial type session. The session should be focused and the agenda set by the artist receiving the support.
Working as a creative practitioner can sometimes be isolating at the best of times, but at the moment even more so. We have listened to what support may be helpful from the membership through our recent survey and are now working to put some of these measures in place. Although resources are limited at present we would very much like to pilot this scheme with the view of developing it should it prove valuable.
Please also note that these sessions will be focused on creative practice and development in the wider sense, we will recruit separately for more specific advice sessions which are based around technical help or specific skills.
The mentors will paid for one hour preparation time (to familiarise themselves with the artist they are going to talk with), one hour delivery time (to conduct the session) and one hour follow up (in order to reflect on discussion and forward on any useful links or information which may be beneficial). The fee is based on this three hour structure at £35 per hour = £105 total for the mentoring session.
