CREATE is a new scheme which awards free entry into Spring Fling for artists working in installation, experimental or site-specific work that doesn’t necessarily fit within the ‘traditional’ or ‘typical’ open studios setting.

The programme was first launched at the 2023 event as a way to support artists and makers working in these disciplines, to make the event more accessible to a broader range of artists and to widen the event’s offering for visitors. Upland hopes to emphasise that although Spring Fling is for many participants a way of generating income, it can also be a platform to showcase exciting, less commercial work. The CREATE bursary offers particpants free entry to take part in Spring Fling.

In 2023, emerging artist Marly Merle was the CREATE recipient.  Marley is a multidisciplnary artist based in Glasgow, who is originally from Dumfries. Marly is interested in exploring new worlds, cities and spaces to create physical artworks that provoke ideas around new and better places in which to exist. Marly exhibited work at Gracefield Arts Centre during Spring Fling 2023.

The selected artists for 2024 are Bea Last and Hope London. Find out more about the 2024 project here.
